STUDIES IN MATHEMATICS: 'Études mathématiques', definitions of arith-metic, geometry, geography and the art of fortification; 18th cent. French. With pen and ink diagrams. Composed after 1710 (f. 151). Formerly titled on original binding 'Traité des Mathema' (f. 1). Probably the property of a member of the Clifford family. A memoranda in an early 19th cent. hand (f. i verso) states that the manuscript was 'Bought at a sale of Ld De Clifford' Books with others . . .'. Owned by William Henry Black, Assistant Keeper at the Public Record Office (d.1872), who purchased the item near Drury Lane Theatre on 1 Nov. 1871 (f. 1). Black foliated the volume and, according to his memoranda, when he purchased the manuscript, it was in its original binding. Subsequently owned by the Patent Office Library. The following numbers occur: 'Anon. 1587', f. 1; '54/A', f. 1; '16980', f. 1; 'FA 20', '1587', spine. A slip from the Patent Office catalogue (f. ii) bears the numbers '710', '16980' and 'Anon. E. 7'. Transferred from the Department of Printed Books with Add. 56248-56249, 30 April 1970.
Paper; ff. ii+223. Late 19th-cent. foliation retained. 210 x 155mm. One French 18th-cent. hand throughout. Patent Office Library binding.
