HALSBURY PAPERS. HALSBURY PAPERS. A selection of the correspondence and papers of the Giffard family, Earls of Halsbury; 1798-1921. The major part of the collection (Add. 56370-56377), comprises papers of Hardinge Stanley Giffard (d.1921), Baron Halsbury 1885, 1st Earl of Halsbury 1898, Lord Chancellor 1885-1886, 1886-1892 and 1895-1905. A few of the documents in these volumes were printed by A. Wilson Fox in The Earl of Halsbury: Lord High Chancellor (1929). Also represented (Add. 56367-56369) are: Halsbury's grandfather, John Giffard (b.1745, d.1819) of Dromartin Castle near Dublin; his uncle, Sir Ambrose Hardinge Giffard (b.1771, d.1827), Advocate Fiscal and later Chief Justice of Ceylon; and his father, Stanley Lees Giffard, LL.D. (b.1788, d.1858), Editor of The Standard. The collection of which this material once formed part was the subject of Report No. 579 of the National Register of Archives (1958). Presented by John Anthony Hardinge Giffard, 3rd Earl of Halsbury, 11 July 1970.
