EDWARD KING: 'Agriculture; or Drill-Husbandry'; 1744. Probably auto-graph fair copy, with revisions. Latin and English. Probably Edward King of Bromley, Kent, identified from arms (f. iii). See also A Visitation of the County of Kent, ed. G. J. Armytage (1906), Harleian Society no. 54, p. 91 and Venn, Alumni Cantabrigienses, i (1924), iii, pp. 17, 18. Many of the technical details in the text are taken from Jethro Tull, The Horse-Hoing Husbandry (2nd edn. 1743). Armorial bookplate, imperfect, of Edward King, f. iii. The volume was formerly in the Patent Office Library, where it was numbered 'V 42 8 1'. Patent Office Library stamps (ff. ii, iii verso, ix) and cataloguing slip (f. iv). Transferred from the Department of Printed Books, September 1970.
Paper; ff. ix+104. 304 x 243mm. Binding of green quarter calf on boards by James Truscott & Son 'Contractor for Bookbinding to H. M. Government' (label inside back cover, f. ix). Patent Office Library labels on spine and at foot of front cover 'V', '42', '8' and '1'. Spine lettered in gilt 'Agriculture / King / 1744'.

3. ff. 5-22v. Preface in English prose.
4. ff. 23v, 24. Commendatory verses by Griffith Lloyd, Master of Harsnett's School, Chigwell. Latin and English.
5. ff. 27v-81. 'Agriculture; or Drill-Husbandry'. The main work, comprising 629 Latin hexameters in the manner of Virgil's 'Georgics' (ff. 27v-76v, versos only), is accompanied by a parallel version in 777 lines of English blank verse (ff. 28-77, rectos only), and is provided with annotations. The annotations continue on rectos only to f. 81.
6. ff. 87v-93. Three separate passages comprising (ff. 87v-92v) 51 lines of Latin and (ff. 88-93) 65 lines of corresponding English verse marked for insertion in the main text.
