SUPPLEMENTARY GLADSTONE PAPERS. Correspondence and papers of and concerning William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister (d.1898); 1845-1902, n.d. Partly copies. Some printed material. Some French and Italian. The items were once part of the Gladstone Papers, now Add. 44086-44835. The collection became separated from the rest of the archive when it was used by John Morley, Viscount Morley of Blackburn 1908, when working on his The Life of William Ewart Gladstone (1903). It was subsequently found in a deed box in the archives of Macmillan, publishers of the 'Life'. The discovery was announced by Professor M. R. D. Foot, 'A revealing new light on Gladstone', The Times, 6 Nov. 1970, p. 10. The bulk of the collection relates to Vol. iii of the 'Life', and includes transcripts and notes made by or for John Morley. A few of the memoranda have been published by the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts in The Prime Ministers' Papers Series: W. E. Gladstone, iv, 'Autobiographical Memoranda 1868-1894', ed.

J. Brooke and M. Sorensen (1981). Presented, with some material subsequently transferred to the Department of Printed Books, by Sir Erskine William Gladstone, 7th Bart., 31 Oct. 1970.
