RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: String quartet no. 2, in A minor; 1944. Autograph parts. Dedicated to Jean Stewart, the violist. See references to 'Jean's 4tet' on f. 5 and passim. The last movement, 'Epilogue', bears the cancelled heading on f. 6b, 'St Joan greets St Jean', revised to 'Greetings from Joan to Jean', a reference to the theme which is taken from music for an uncompleted film about Joan of Arc. First performed by the Menges String Quartet, which included Jean Stewart, at the National Gallery, London, 12 Oct. 1944. Published 1947. See M. Kennedy, The works of Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1964, p. 574. A sketch for the quartet is in Add. MS. 50371 A, f. 9b. Followed (ff. 34-38b) by the autograph first viola part of the Finale of the double string trio, 1938. See Kennedy, p. 562. Presented by Mrs Jean Hadley, née Stewart.
