'A SURVEY OF WOODSTOCK [in Athy, co. Kildare] one of the Mannors of the Right Honourable [James FitzGerald] the [20th] Earl [and 1st Marquess] of Kildare [1st Duke of Leinster]', by John Rocque (d. 1762); 1755-1757. Comprises eight coloured plans. (1) A general plan of the manor; 1756. Each townland is distinguished by the use of different colours. f. 1;- (2) Woodstock; 1757. f. 2;-
(3) Coleroe; 1755. f. 3;- (4) Goullyduff; 1755. f. 4;- (5) Killcoo; 1756. f. 5;-
(6) Killcrow; [1756?]. f. 6;- (7) Castlemitchel; 1756. f. 7;- (8) Rossbran; 1756.
f. 8. Scale bars of a quarter of an English mile, divided usually into perches, to 2 or 4 inches, with corresponding scale bars for Irish quarter miles. A table for each plan gives the acreage of each field or plot of land. Land use is distinguished by the use of symbols and red and green ink and wash for arable land, meadow and rough pasture or bog. Titles within decorative cartouches. See A. A. Horner, 'Cartouches and Vignettes on the Kildare Estate Maps of John Rocque', Quarterly Bulletin of the Irish Georgian Society, xiv, 1971, pp. 57-76. The volume is the first of a set of eight comprising a complete survey of the Kildare estates of Lord Kildare carried out by Rocque, 1755-60, which is the only MS. survey by Rocque that has so far come to light. See J. H. Andrews, 'The French School of Dublin Land Surveyors', Irish Geography, v, 1967, pp. 275-92, especially p. 281. See also H. M. T. Cobbe, 'Four manuscript maps recently acquired by the British Museum', Journal of the Society of Archivists, iv, 1973, pp. 646-52. The eight volumes remained with the FitzGerald family in the Library at Carton, co. Kildare (bookplate, f. ii), and, after the sale of the library in 1949, at Kilkea until they were sold privately, circa 1960. They were resold at Sotheby's, 11 Nov. 1963, as lots 167-174. A microfilm of the whole survey is P. 4032 in the National Library of Ireland, Dublin. The survey of Athy is now MS. 4278 in the Library, Trinity College, Dublin. The survey of Maynooth is now MS. plans 690 in the University Library, Cambridge. The survey of Castledermot is now MS. 22003 in the National Library of Ireland, Dublin (Sotheby's sale-cat. 14-15 Oct. 1974, lot 569). A study by Rocque for the view of Kildare on the title-page of the survey of Kildare, now in a private collection in Dublin, was in the possession of Graham Pollard. A photograph presented by him is MS. Facs. Suppl. XII (6).
