CHRISTY DE LA PALLIÈRE, JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE ROUND THE COASTS OF SOUTH AMERICA: 'Journal Du Voyage du Joseph Royal A la Mer du Sud Commancé L'an 1719. Et finy Lan 1723. Par Le sr delapallierre Christy'; 1719-1723. French. The journal describes the author's voyage to the South Seas as the second-in-command of the Joseph Royal, one of a squadron of ten ships in the service of the Compagnie des Indes, leaving St Malo 21 November 1719 and reaching Brazil in February 1720. De La Pallière recorded each stage of the journey round the coasts of South America, and noted events of interest up to his return to St Malo, 2 February 1723. There are cargo lists for all the ships in the squadron (ff. 82-86), and a series of forty-eight charts and views (ff. 90b-135), most of them with soundings added. At the end (ff. 138-139) is a table of contents. Formerly part of the Latin American collections of Alberto Dodero, sold at Sotheby's in 1963 and 1964. Purchased at Sotheby's, 8 Apr. 1964 (lot 1252).

Paper; ff. iii+139. 315 x 295mm. 1719-1723. The plans use ink and watercolours. Original binding in modern cruciform folder and slipcase. Above the title (f. 1), in a later 18th cent. hand, is the note 'Inventorié et cotté', followed by an illegible signature, and 'greffier', i.e. clerk, usually clerk of the court.
