THE HAIG MEMORANDUM Memorandum of operations on the Western Front during the command of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig; 1916-1918. One of six typewritten copies (see ff. viii, x). Preceded (ff. i-ix) by correspondence, etc., relating to its presentation, 1920, and reservation, 1928, 1950, and followed (ff. 76-78) by three maps of German and British dispositions, etc., 21 Mar. 1918, n.d. Compiled by Haig's successive Chiefs of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Sir Launcelot Edward Kiggell and Gen. Sir Herbert Alexander Lawrence (see R. Blake, The Private Papers of Douglas Haig, 1952, pp. 365-9, where short extracts are published), revised by Haig and deposited in the British Museum in 1920. Because of its criticisms of the French High Command and the British Government, it was reserved from public use on Haig's instructions until 1940, and then for further periods until 1964 (see ff. i-ii, v, ix). Presented by Reginald Baliol Brett, 2nd Viscount Esher, on the instructions of Earl Haig, in 1920 and hitherto reserved.
