CAPT. F. H. MITCHELL, R.N.: LETTERS FROM THE DARDANELLES, ETC.; 1915-1916. Extracts. Francis Herbert Mitchell (b. 1876, d. 1946) entered the Navy in 1889, and was promoted Captain in 1913, Rear-Admiral 1924, Vice-Admiral 1929 and Admiral 1933. For his service as a Naval Adviser in the Gallipoli campaign he was mentioned four times in despatches and awarded the D.S.O. The extracts contained in this volume, which give an account of the campaign, derive from letters, some in diary form, mostly to his wife, Marion, 23 Mar. 1915-aft. 9 Jan. 1916, and were copied out by her and forwarded to her mother-in-law, 5 Apr. 1915-aft. 9 Jan. 1916. Included are seven letters from her to Mrs Mitchell senior (ff. 1, 98, 99, 109, 117, 148, 178), and one autograph letter from Captain Mitchell to his mother (f. 171). Presented, 7 October 1964, by A. H. Knighton-Hammond, Esq., who was married to Admiral Mitchell's sister.
