CALLIGRAPHIC COPY-BOOK OF CHRONOGRAMS Vol. I A. Written by Henderick van Haeften for Claes Burchman Dobbeszoon of Amsterdam; 1567
(f. 3)-1568 (f. 35b). Dutch. The chronograms include, with examples of alphabets, specimens of several types of penmanship and are expressed in a collection of moral verses and sayings, mostly representing either 1567 or 1568, the two years of the book's composition. If these two dates were intended in other cases, the author has miscalculated by one or more numerical letters. Described, and ff. 3, 15 and 29 reproduced in facsimile, in J. Hilton, Chronograms, iii, 1895, pp. 403-4. See 52608 B, ff. 7-9. Belonged to Mathÿs Reintes Sideryus, 1664. Sideryus's name occurs on f. 36b with a note which appears to record the purchase of the volume from Wyllim Peeiwus, 1661. Purchased from Frederik Muller and Co., booksellers, of Amsterdam, by James Hilton, F.S.A., whose ownership label is
f. i, 1888. See 52608 B, ff. 1-4. Acquired by the British Museum, with Add. MS. 54196, as part of the Hilton Bequest, 1907. See B.M.Q., v, 1930-1, pp. 119-20. Transferred from the Department of Printed Books.
Vellum interleaved with paper; ff. i+40. 280 x 190mm. 1567-1568. Numerical letters in red. Watermarks with the arms of the University of Paris and the name Siméon Nivelle, resembling C. M. Briquet, Les Filigranes, 1907, no. 1844. Contemporary binding of brown calf on oak boards, blind-stamped and
-tooled. Endpapers (ff. 2, 39) comprise two leaves from a theological treatise, 15th cent. Pastedowns (ff. 1, 40, the latter no longer stuck down to the binding) comprise two fragments of a copy of sermons by Bernard of Clairvaux, containing parts of the sermons 'In Nativitate Joannis Baptistae' (Migne, Pat. Lat., clxxxiii, cols. 400-2), 'In Vigilia SS. Petri et Pauli Apostolorum' (Migne, clxxxiii, cols. 404-6), and 'In Festo SS. Petri et Pauli Apostolorum' (Migne, clxxxiii, cols. 405-6), 14th cent.
