CORRESPONDENCE OF THE RADFORD FAMILY, of Manchester and Bury, co. Lanc.; 1770-circa 1855. Thirty-one of the letters are written by Captain Thomas John Harvey, 66th Foot, mostly to his mother, Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Harvey, from the Peninsula, 1811-1813, and as a prisoner in France, 1813-1814, and to his mother and sister, Elizabeth Caroline, wife of Joseph Radford, from Wales, 1815-1823, and India, 1824, where he was serving in the 1st Regt. He died at Patanagoh in Burma, 11 Feb. 1826. Twenty-seven of the letters are addressed to Mrs Rad-ford, eighteen by her brother, and thirty-two are from her to her son, Richard. Also included (ff. 55-60b) is a letter of Joseph Radford to his wife, 17 Aug. 1819, giving an account of the Peterloo Massacre on the previous day, and (ff. 105-120b) letters of their son, James, on a visit to Paris, 1838. The correspondence is followed (ff. 183-187) by notes for and a draft of a petition by Mrs Radford for the War Medal which would have been awarded to her brother, aft. 1849.
