RICHARD STRAUSS: 'CAPRICCIO', op. 85, the conclusion of scene VII and the beginning of scene VIII; [Sept.?] 1940. Autograph, comprising the portion of the opera from five bars before figure 110 to seven bars after figure 113 in the printed score, Mainz, 1942, with the following major differences:- (a) Eight extra bars at the end of scene VII are marked to be cut, bringing the music to its final form. This cut is preceded by the stage direction '(Lärm im Nebensaal)'. Other stage directions, inserted to replace those removed with the cut, correspond closely with the printed score;- (b) Scene VIII employs the text of the published libretto, but the music is in detail entirely different from the final version. A half-bar phrase used in that version is pencilled below the stave at the foot of the recto of the leaf. Correspondence between Strauss and his librettist, Clemens Krauss, indicates that composition and revision of this passage were in progress in Sept. 1940. See Richard Strauss, Clemens Krauss. Briefwechsel, ed. G. K. Kende and W. Schuh, Munich, 1963, pp. 169, 171. Both writers use the phrase 'Lärm im Nebensaal', but the direction does not appear in the published score. The complete short score, Vienna, Österreichisches Nationalbibliothek, Musiksammlung Fonds 59, Clemens Krauss-Archiv, 1/1, has a number of revisions and inserted sections, suggesting two stages of composition. This leaf apparently formed part of the earlier version. It is replaced in the Vienna MS. by a revised section beginning at f. 30, paginated from 55. At the foot of the verso is a signed note of presentation by Strauss, dated Montreux, 1 Nov. 1947, following his return from England, 'Dr Adolf und Frau Mignon Aber in dankbarer Erinnerung freundlicher Samariterdienste'. For a similar gift of a sketch leaf from this opera, now Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, Mus. MSS. 9678, see Richard Strauss. Autographen in München und Wien. Verzeichnis, ed. G. Brosche and K. Dachs, Tutzing, 1979, p. 21. Presented by Mrs Mignon Aber.
Paper; f. 1. 265 x 335mm. 1940. A single leaf of 14 stave music paper, written in ink on both sides, the pages numbered 55, 56.
