KER PORTER JOURNALS: journals and note-books of Sir Robert Ker Porter (d.1842) concerning his travels in Russia, the Caucasus, Persia and Mesopotamia; 1817-1820. Autograph. Used in the preparation of Porter's account of this journey, published under the title Travels in Georgia, Persia, Armenia, Ancient Babylonia, etc., . . ., 2 vols. (1821). For other manuscripts of Ker Porter relating to this expedition, see Add. 14758, 18281-18282, 58217. After the death of Jane Porter, Sir Robert's elder sister, in 1850, Porter's diaries and journals, etc., were sold at Sotheby's, 19 March 1852, lot 418, and were purchased by Sir Thomas Phillipps, see Phillipps Studies, IV, p. 73. Lot numbers from this sale are stuck to the covers of some of the volumes, eg. Add. 53792, f. i. The manuscripts were sold at a Phillipps sale at Sotheby's, 28 June 1966, lot 476. Purchased from Winifred Myers (Autographs), 10 Dec. 1966.
