FORREST'S TOURS' (so the original label, now removed and laid down as f. ii): a copy, in the same hand throughout, of three separate tours described by different authors. Illustrated with twenty-nine water-colour drawings. The first two tours are anonymous, the third by Theodosius Forrest, R.A., who is mentioned as taking part in the second tour, and also probably in the first (see below). Detailed descriptions of buildings and objects of artistic interest are included. The names of places illustrated are given in the Index to this Catalogue. The tours are as follows:-
(1) 'A Tour thro' the Netherlands', through Northern France and the Netherlands; II Aug.-2 Sept. 1769. The statement 'The and Bob rode on horses' on f. 19b may refer to Theodosius Forrest; that he was one of the travellers is also suggested by the reference in the third tour (f. 63), Of which he was the author, to the 'Dutch Trackschoot', here described in detail (ff. 13b-16). ff. 2-21.
(2) 'Tour into Derbyshire', through cos. Leic., Nott., York and Derby. The account, in the form of a continuous narrative addressed perhaps to the writer's father, contains no dates, but may be assigned to the summer Of 1773 (cf. the reference on f. 28 to Nottingham County Hall, completed in 1770, as 'built a few years ago', and, on f. 28b, to 'Thoresby a Seat belonging to the Duke of Kingston', who d. 23 Sept. 1773). Others, besides the author and Forrest, who are mentioned as taking part in the tour are 'Elwes' (spelt 'Elves' on f. 24), 'Cotes' [probably Samuel Cotes, miniaturist] and 'Tyler' [William Tyler, R.A.]. ff. 22-56.
(3) 'A journey to Paris, by Theo: Forrest. August 1777', from London to Paris and back; 2 Aug.-27 Aug. 1777. ff. 57-70. Paper; ff. ii+ 71. Oblong folio. Late XVIII cent. Hodgson's sale-cat., 5 Feb. 1931, lot 534.
