AUTOGRAPH LETTERS, MAINLY ON MUSICAL MATTERS, consisting for the most part of letters addressed to Edward Speyer, amateur of music and art (d. 1934), arranged in alphabetical order of writers, with a few drafts or copies of Speyer's replies; 1876-1930. English and German. In the correspondence with Sir Henry Hadow occurs some discussion of his proposed identification of Schubert's 'Gastein' symphony with his Grand Duo in C major, op. 140, of which Speyer owned the original MS. Other correspondents include Sir George Grove, Sir George Henschel, Sir Hubert Parry, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Arthur Goring Thomas and Sir Henry Wood. The names of the writers are given in the Index to this Catalogue. For further correspondence of Edward Speyer see Add. MS. 46716. At the end of the volume are autograph MSS. of two musical works dedicated to Hubert Ferdinand Kufferath, the composer, father-in-law of Speyer, viz. 'Andante con moto' in E major, for pianoforte, by Charles Edward Horsley, 1841 (ff. 301b-302) and 'Aufmunterung zur Freude; Chorgesang', for four voices, by Hermann Theobold Petschke, 1841 (f. 302b).
