SURVEYS AND PERAMBULATION, WITH PLANS, BY JOHN NORDEN, of the manors of Mincingbury, Abbotsbury and Hoares, in Barley, co. Hertf., made for Sir John Spencer, Lord of the Manors; 1603. Autograph. On f. 46 it is stated that the perambulation took place in Sept. and Oct. 1603,whereas the title-page (f. 1) ascribes the compilation of the MS. to Oct. and Nov. 1563. The latter date is certainly an error, since Sir John Spencer (Lord Mayor of London 1594-1595) did not acquire the manors until circ. 1593 (see V.C.H., Herts., iv, P. 38, for the descent of the manors), and Norden himself was born only in 1548. The contents, which exemplify the principles laid down by Norden in the third book of his Surveyor's Dialogue, are:-(a) Title-page, f.1 (b) Surveys (Mincingbury, ff. 2-IIb; Abbotsbury, ff. 13-21b; Hoares, ff. 22-25). fF. 2-25;-(c) Maps, in colour, consisting of ten doublepage sections, linked by marginal letters and figures. There is no indication of scale, which, however, appears to be about 18-19 in. to the mile. Oriented with north-east at the top. ff. 26-45;-(d) Perambulation, ff. 46-74. Vellum; fF. vi+ 74. Folio. A.D. 1603. Gatherings of four leaves, except the plans, which are double leaves (370 mm. x 490 mm.). Inserted at the beginning (formerly loose in the volume) are:-(a) 17th-cent. index of personal names mentioned in the Survey (ff. i-v);-(b) bond between Stephen Swain, of Kimpton, co. Hertf., and John Conesby, of South Mimms, co. Hertf. 1712 (ff. v, vi). Puttick and Simpson's sale-cat., 9 Apr. 1931, lot 248. Purchased with the assistance of Dr Redcliffe Nathan Salaman, F.R. S., of Barley.
