Title:

PIGGOTT PAPERS. Historical collections relating to the international law of blockade, etc., compiled by Sir Francis Taylor Piggott (knt. 1905; d. 1925), formerly Chief Justice of Hong Kong and author of numerous books and articles on international law. The present papers were mostly compiled in connection with the 'Law of the Sea' series of historical and legal works projected by him. Of this series only two volumes were published (Univ. of London Press, 1919), viz. vol. 1, Documentary History of the Armed Neutralities, 1780 and 1800 (with Prof. G. W. T. Omond), and vol. iv, The Declaration of Paris, 1856: a study, documented. The former volume contains (pp. v-xiii) a general introduction to the series. The titles of the unpublished

vols. ii-iii and v-vi of the series are given (in vol. iv, facing title-page) as Documentary History of the French Wars, 1793-1815, in two parts, before and after the Peace of Amiens, and Principles governing the Relations of Belligerent and Neutral, also in two parts, viz. History as the Basis of the Law and The Law as derived from History. Piggott also projected a series of reprints of wellknown treatises, pamphlets, and documents dealing with international law, under the title of the 'English Classical Series'. No volume of this series was published, but printed proof-sheets of part of vol. i and of vols. ii and iii are in Add. MSS. 42526 and 42548 below. The present collection of papers, for which see also Brit. Mus. Quart., vi, 1931-1932, PP. 75-76, was formerly deposited in the Institute of International Affairs, where the papers were sorted and arranged. This arrangement has in general been maintained. The collection comprises:-(a) copies of, and extracts from, historical documents, both unpublished (mostly in the Public Record Office) and published;-(b) extracts from historical and legal authorities;-(c) notes and sections of introductions and commentaries by Piggott himself:-(d) a small quantity of modern correspondence and miscellaneous papers. Seven volumes (see below) consist wholly or in part of printed proof-sheets, the remainder mainly of typescript, with corrections (mostly autograph), and of manuscript by Piggott and his assistants. Thirty volumes. Various sizes. (The foliation printed below does not take account of numerous small slips of paper which have been given roman or star numbers.) Presented by Lady Piggott, widow of the compiler.
