LETTERS, CHIEFLY ON LITERARY SUBJECTS, ADDRESSED TO THOMAS WARTON the younger, Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, and author of the History of English Poetry; 1742- 1826
- Scope & Content:
-
. The writers, whose names are all given in the Index to this Catalogue, include Warton's brother, Joseph, Headmaster of Winchester, Edmond Malone, William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester, and Thomas Percy, Bishop of Dromore. Percy's letters are included in The Percy Letters, [vol. iii]: The Correspondence of Thomas Percy and Thomas Warton, 1951. Included (Add. MS. 42560, f. 219) is a contemporary transcript of Thomas Gray's celebrated letter to Warton, 15 Apr. 1770, enclosing his scheme for a history of English poetry; this transcript forms the basis of the text printed by Toynbee and Whibley, Correspondence of Thomas Gray, iii, pp. 1122-1125. The present papers supplement Warton's letters to Malone in Add. MS. 30375 and to Percy in Add. MS. 32329. The letters bear throughout annotations apparently in the hand of James Ingram, President of Trinity College, Oxford, who arranged them about 1825 with a view to publication and disposed of the copyright in them to John Murray, publisher (1) on 4 Nov. 1826 (see Add. MS. 42561, f. 239). The present material was apparently not known to Clarissa Rinaker when writing her Thomas Warton; A Biographical and Critical Study, University of Illinois, 1916. See also Brit. Mus. Quart., vi, 1931-1932, PP. 73-74. Paper; ff. 236, 239. Quarto. 1742-1826. Presented by Sir )John Murray, K. C. V. 0., D. S. 0.
