Add MS 42563-42564

Two volumes (vol. I, Epistles; vol. II, Gospels), each containing the Temporale and Sanctorale. The latter comprises lessons for the six feasts of the Virgin, and for those of St Norbert, St John Baptist, 'in divisione apostolorum', St Augustine Conf., SS. Cornelius and Cyprian (14 Sept.), 'in dedicatione ecclesie', All Saints and All Souls. At the end of vol. 1 (Add. MS. 42563, ff. 17b-18) a later hand has added an epistle for the feast of St Augustine Bp. Vellum; ff. 19 (f. I blank), 18. 328 MM. X 240 mm. A.D. 1599. Written in a gothic book-hand with headings in red and large archaistic flourished initials, etc., in red and blue. The first page of text in each vol. (Add. MSS. 42563, f. 3; 42564, f. 1) has a coloured border (foliage, fruit, birds and monsters). On the fly-leaf of vol. I (Add. MS. 42563, f. 2) is the contemporary inscription, 'D.D. Nicolaus, et Henricus Sandronii, germani fratres: huius domus Canonici Regulares, hunc librum Epistolarum dederunt. Anno d[omi]ni. 15990. 14. 7bris.' The only Premonstratensian house dedicated to SS. Cornelius and Cyprian would seem to be that at Ninove; the names of the Sandronii do not, however, appear in its surviving records (Ghent, Rijksarchief; briefly listed by R. van Waefelghem, Répertoire des sources relatives à l'histoire ... de l'Ordre de Prémontré). Contemporary binding (preserved in separate cases) of wooden boards, covered with red velvet on which remains the impress of metal bosses, now wanting. Presented by E. G. Millar, Esq., DLitt., F.S.A.
