LETTERS OF OR CONCERNING HARRIET MARTINEAU(1802-1876),author, addressed to George Jacob Holyoake, the rationalist; 1851-1877, n.d. Her own letters (thirteen) relate mainly to her activities as a writer. The writers of the other letters are her nieces Maria (f. 19) and Jane Martineau (f. 27) and Henry George Atkinson (ff. 29, 31); also included in the volume are an undated copy of one of Holyoake's replies (f. 15) and some newspaper cuttings about her, 1851 (?)-1877 (ff. 33-39). Part of one of the letters of Harriet Martineau (f. 24), dated 28 Dec. 1857, regarding her attitude to Mazzini, is printed by J. MacCabe in Life and Letters of George Jacob Holyoake, 1908, i, p. 289. Quotations from other letters are given in Brit. Mus. Quart., vii, 1932-1933, pp. 21-22, and cf. Vera Wheatley, The Life and Work of Harriet Martineau, 1957, P. 301, etc., and R. K.
