'SWINBURNE', by Sir Edmund William Gosse: the autograph draft of his Life of Algernon Charles Swinburne, which was begun in 1915 and published 3 Apr. 1917 (see Evan Charteris, The Life and Letters of Edmund Gosse, 1931, PP. 383-411 Passim). The present MS. apparently represents an early state of the work, many additions having been introduced by the time of the third proofs (22-29 Mar. 1916), a set of which, corrected by the author and
T. J. Wise, is in the Department of Printed Books, press-mark L.R. 268 d. 4. The printed extracts on ff. 13,15 and 20 are cut from proofs of Lord Redesdale's account of Swinbume's life at Eton which formed an appendix to Gosse's earlier Life of Swinburne, privately printed at the Chiswick Press in 1912. Cf. also Friends of the National Libraries, Annual Report, 1932-1933, p. 24. Inserted at the beginning of the MS. (f. ii) is a letter from the author to his son, Philip, announcing that the whole edition Of 1500 copies had sold out in two days; Sandbanks, 6 Apr. 1917. Paper; ff. ii+251. Quarto. Circ. 1915. Bookplate of the donor (f. i). Presented by Philip Gosse, Esq., M.D., through the Friends of the National Libraries.
