MINUTE-BOOK OF THE 'BOARD OF BROTHERS' (altered from 'The Uncaptious Brothers'); 7 July 1709-5 June 1713. The 'Board of Brothers', afterwards the 'Loyal Brotherhood', was a Tory-Jacobite drinking club founded in 1709 by its first president, Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort, which met during parliamentary sessions, usually weekly, until 1763, and continued in a modified form after that date. A microfilm of another minute-book, 24 Mar. 1748-18 Mar. 1760, sold at Sotheby's, 8 Nov. 1960, lot 183, is M. 602 in the Department of Manuscripts. The minute-books for 1735-1741 and 1771-1833 are now London Metropolitan Archives, A/BLB/1,2. On the history of the club and its political importance, see L. Colley in 'The Loyal Brotherhood and The Cocoa Tree', Historical Journal, xx, 1977, pp. 77-95. Presented by A. L. Hayward, Esq.
