‘Recueil de Synphonie de Plusieurs Maistres’: collection of sixteen sonatas and a chaconne for various combinations of trumpets, oboes and strings.
- Scope & Content:
-
‘Recueil de Synphonie de Plusieurs Maistres’ (see f. i). Collection of sixteen sonatas and a chaconne, in parts, for various combinations of trumpets, oboes and strings; early 18th century. Copied in a single hand, except for f. 122. Described as ‘Recueil de Synphonie de Plusieurs Maistres’ (see f. i).
An engraved flourished title 'Sonata' begins each instrumental part. An earlier numbering, diverging from that preserved in the present arrangement in that it lacks 4, 7, 10, 13 and duplicates 2, 3, 5, runs as follows: 1, 2, 3, 15, 5, 11, 9, 8, 14, 6, 5, 12, 3, 18, 2, 16, 17. Thus the collection may have originally included a further sonata.
Pieces are attributed to the following composers, and are described as sonatas unless otherwise stated:
John Barrett
- ff. 1-8v, for trumpet, oboe and strings, in D major
Giovanni Bononcini
- ff. 29-36v, for strings, in C majo.

- ff. 9-13, for trumpet, oboe and strings, in C major
- ff. 14-22, for two trumpets, two oboes and strings, in D major
- ff. 23-28, for trumpet, oboe and strings, in C major
- ff. 37-42, for strings, in B flat major
- ff. 43-47, for oboe and strings, in B flat major
- ff. 48-52, for oboe and strings, in C major
- ff. 69-80, two trumpets, two oboes and strings, in C major
- ff. 116-121, ‘Chacone for a hautboy or violins, tenor and basse’, in G major. Attributed to Finger, but this is a four part transcription of the chaconne from Lully’s Phaëton.
Johann Adolf Hasse
- f. 122, sixteen bars of a minuet in F major. A single part only, and copied in a different hand to the rest of the volume.
James ‘Peasable’ [Paisible]
- ff. 61-68, for two trumpets or oboes and strings, in D major
Daniel Purcell
- ff. 53-60, for trumpet or oboe, and strings, in D major
- ff. 81-87, for trumpet or oboe and strings, in C major
- ff. 94-101, for two trumpets and strings, in D major
Described and discussed in D. Smithers, 'Seventeenth-century English trumpet music', Music and Letters, xlviii, 1967, pp. 358-65, who on p. 362 identifies the sonata by Bononcini as the 'Sinfonia Settima à 6' in his Sinfonie a 5. 6. 7. e 8. Istromenti, op. 3, Bologna, 1685. Another copy of the sonata by Finger on ff. 37-42b is in Uppsala. See A. W. Marshall, 'The Chamber music of Godfrey Finger', The Consort, xxvi, 1970, p. 432.
