DESPATCHES AND PAPERS OF SIR BENJAMIN KEENE (b. 1697, d. 1757), K.B., as Ambassador to Spain, together with other papers relating to Spanish affairs; 1741-1790. Partly French and Spanish. Preceded (f. 1) by a contents list. Supplements Add. MSS. 43412-43443. Part of a collection by Richard Phelps, Under-Secretary for the Northern Department, 1763-5, 1770-1, acquired by Richard Blyke (d. 1775), F.R.S., F.S.A., and then by Thomas Astle (d. 1803), Keeper of the Records in the Tower of London (see his list of the papers at
f. 124), most of which was bequeathed to George Temple-Nugent-Grenville, Marquess of Buckingham, whence it eventually became Stowe MSS. 256-261 in the collections of this Department. The present papers, however, were acquired, apparently with Add. MSS. 34711-34713, by Astle's second son, Philip Astle afterwards Hills (d. 1830), of Colne Park, co. Essex, who annotated some of the letters and Astle's list, and added a table of contents (f. 1) and a biographical note on Keene (f. 22), including a copy of his epitaph in The Norfolk Tour, Norwich, 1786, p. 164. Originally bound up by Hills as the third of three volumes relating to Spain. See ff. i, 1, 125. F. i is a fragment of a lease to Michael Hills, 18th cent., used as the spine of this binding. Numbered '49' on ff. i, ii. Sotheby's sale cat., 19 Feb. 1947, lot 578; Maggs Cat. no. 852, 1958, item 121. Presented by the Friends of the National Libraries.
