ROLL CHARTULARY OF THE CISTERCIAN ABBEY OF FLAXLEY, co. Glouc., founded 1151; mid 13th cent. Latin. G. R. C. Davis, Medieval Cartularies, 1958, no. 407. The 97 items copied herein comprise private charters, with names of witnesses, temp. Henry II-temp. Henry III, some of which are noted as being in the hands of the cellarer (m. 3) or sacristan (mm. 3, 4), as well as lists of rents, a list of the abbey's books (m. 5d) and bulls of Alexander III, 1175-1179 (m. 4d), and Celestine III, 1192, with a drawing of the Rota (m. 3d). See W. Holtzmann, Papsturkunden in England, iii, 1952, p. 78. A note (m. 4d) that the abbey had two other privileges of Alexander III, and one of Eugenius III, follows the bull of Alexander III, and there are notes of other documents not copied herein. Printed from a copy by the Rev. T. Fitzroy Fenwick of a copy by Sir Thomas Phillipps, in A. W. Crawley-Boevey, The Cartulary . . . of the Cistercian Abbey of Flaxley, Exeter, 1887, with numerous minor errors and omissions arising from the copies not being collated with the original, which was mislaid in the Phillipps MSS., 19th cent. Belonged, 1825, to Thomas Wynniatt, of Staunton, co. Glouc. (name on m. 1), and afterwards to Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart. Formerly Phillipps MS. 24180. Purchased with the aid of a contribution from the Friends of the National Libraries.
