MORAVIAN CHURCH VERSES BY WILLIAM HAMMOND, B.A.
(1719-1783), member of the Moravian Brethren, in Latin, Greek and English, and occasionally Hebrew and German. Autograph. The poems fall into four main categories, viz.:-(i) Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs; (ii) Daily Blessings; (iii) Festival Commemorations; and (iv) a metrical Life of Christ. The Festival series, arranged in decennial groups, is carried by anticipation to 1923. For details of the author, see Hammond's autobiographical narrative, originally composed in Greek, of which an English translation is Add. MS. 45102, ff. 57-64. Other volumes of Hammond's poems are Add. MSS. 44942, 44978, 44979, while his letters of application for admission to the Brotherhood, dated 11 Dec. 1745 and 11 Jan. 1746, are Add. MS. 44919, ff. 84-86 b. The pencilled numeration inside the front covers of Vols. I, II, IV and VI is by Leonard Gadow Hassé, B.D., minister of the Fetter Lane Moravian Church, while Add. MS. 44850, ff. ii-iv, is a typewritten list of places from which Hammond's pieces are dated, compiled by the Rev. John Norman Libbey of the same. Cf. Brit. Mus. Quart., xi, 1936-1937, pp. 24-26. Paper. Six volumes. Folio. 1753-1766. Presented by the Moravian Church, Fetter Lane, through the Rev. J. N. Libbey.
