CHURCHILL WATERMARKS COLLECTION: a collection of specimens, tracings, etc., of watermarks in paper made by William Algernon Churchill, author of Watermarks in paper in Holland, England, France, etc., in the XVII and XVIII centuries, Amsterdam, 1935; 15th-19th centt. Most of the specimens are of 17th or 18th cent. date and of Dutch or Italian provenance, but England, France, Spain, Switzerland, and other countries are also represented. The compiler's own classification of the material has been retained: the annotated cardboard folders in which he arranged it have been bound in at the beginning of the sections to which they relate. Some specimens provided by Dutch archivists have slips attached bearing the dates of the registers or other MSS. from which they were extracted, see the compiler's notes in Vol. I, f. 1 and elsewhere.
