'MÉMOIRE MILITAIRE SUR LE PORTUGAL', [1798-1801], attributed (ff. 20-21) to General Charles François Duperrier Dumouriez and sent by him to the Prince Regent of Portugal (afterwards John VI) in August 1800, according to a pencilled note in English on f. 3. French. Contemporary copy. The treatise, which proposes the method of defending Portugal against a threatened Franco-Spanish attack, is followed (ff. 19-22) by observations thereon in Portuguese by a senior Portuguese official, generally adopting the suggestions of Gen. Dumouriez but rejecting certain recommendations as impractical owing to the defective condition of the Portuguese frontier fortresses. Paper; ff. i + 22. Quarto. Early XIX cent. Marginal annotations in English by a contemporary member of the Taylor family, which was allied by marriage with the Reynell family of Ogwell, co. Devon. The MS. passed into the possession of the latter during the early years of the 19th cent. Presented by A. Reynell, Esq.
