'THE COMING RACE': corrected autograph draft of the novel by Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, first published anonymously in 1871. Many passages in the printed text are lacking, among them the opening paragraph and all other indications that the hero is an American, and the digression on theories of Evolution on pp. 134-144 (cf. f. 115). Unpublished material includes (at ff. 83-89) remarks on communication with the dead (a typewritten copy of which is inserted at ff. 78-82). Ff. 54, 166 are two leaves of a fair copy of the MS. in another hand, with pencil corrections which agree with some of the variant readings in the printed version. F. 2 bears the single word 'Ana', probably a proposed title. See Brit. Mus. Quart., xi, 1936-1937, pp. 77-78. Paper; ff. ii + 243. Folio. Circ. 1863-1871 (watermarks, ff. 151, 152, 1863; f. 2, 1868; ff. 94-227 passim, 1869). Inserted (f. i) is a typewritten signed letter concerning the MS. from the donor to Sir George Francis Hill, K.C.B., Director of the British Museum, 19 June 1936. Presented by the author's grandson, Victor Alexander George Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 2nd Earl of Lytton, K.G.
