Presented by Goodspeed's Book Shop, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. X. Two appreciations of David Garrick, apparently written on his retirement from the stage in 1776, viz.:-(1) 'A Character of Mr Garrick', beg. 'The flowers of Panegyric'. ff. 106-108;-(2) 'The History of Mr Garrick's theatrical life' by 'Leonato', beg. 'In the amplest enjoyment'. ff. 109-112. The two articles were found in a box of press-cuttings and MS. notes on theatrical matters in the Dept. of Printed Books, which was formerly erroneously catalogued under Sarah Sophia Banks, but which is now assigned to the Rev. Charles Burney, D.D., the classical scholar. These appreciations are said to be in his hand; but while they may represent an early form of his writing, they do not resemble the examples preserved in Add. MS. 39302; they do, however, closely resemble a hand associated with Burney's in that MS., ff. 46, 180. The appreciation, 'A Character of Mr Garrick', contains passages apparently taken from Thomas Wilkes, A General View of the Stage, 1769 (e.g. f. 6b: 'The best writers of the Drama... deserves the situation' is taken from Wilkes, op. cit., pp. 230-231; f. 7: 'Perhaps it may be said...
