MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS in the English and Dutch cemeteries at Surat, in India; transcripts and notes made circ. 1860 (with subsequent revisions) by Augustus Fortunatus Bellasis of the Bombay Civil Service, who used part of the material in his article 'Old Tombs in the Cemeteries at Surat', Journal of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, vi, 1862, pp. 146- 156, a few extracts from the printed text of which have been pasted in. Contents:-(1) Chronological index of the subjects of monumental inscriptions in the English cemetery; 1649-1812. ff. 1-5;-(2) Transcripts of monumental inscriptions, in Dutch, in the Dutch cemetery; 1642-1808, made in 1860, with interlineal English translations and prefaced by a chronological index as in art. 1. ff. 6-20. Paper; ff. i + 20. Folio. Circ. 1860. Inserted at the beginning (f. i) is a draft of a letter from Bellasis to the Keeper of Manuscripts, British Museum, dated 28 Jan. 1865, offering to present a similar collection of material to the Museum. There is however no record that any such material was either offered or accepted at this time. Presented by Mrs U.C.M. Strickland.
