LIFE OF CARDINAL MAZARIN, originally composed between 1653 and 1661. Italian. The text is a version of the so-called 'Anonymous of Turin', first published from a manuscript in the University Library of Turin by L. Chiala, Revista Contemporanea, vol. iv, 1855, pp. 540-584, and differs in detail from that printed by Chiala. The scribe of the present manuscript seems to have been a Florentine (see his reference, f. 33, to 'la nostra presa fiorentina'), who has added a preface (f. 2) and an account of Mazarin's death (f. 33). Other Museum manuscripts of this Life are Add. MSS. 8379, ff. 139-180b (dated 24 May 1659); 8751, ff. 2-46b; 10900; 10906, ff. 1-71b; 20063. For manuscripts in Italian libraries, see U. Silvagni, Il Cardinal Mazzarino. Turin, 1928, p. 587. Paper; ff. i + 34. 255 mm. x 190 mm. XVII cent. Numerous watermarks. Armorial bookplate of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (d. 1827). Not certainly identifiable in Guilford sale-cats. but perhaps lot 528 or 582 in that of 8 Dec. 1830.
