PASTON LETTERS
45099. PASTON LETTERS; copies of six letters and an indenture rel. to the family of Maryot and the manor of East Beckham, co. Norfolk, of which William Paston, Justice of Common Pleas, was granted the keepership in 1442 (cf. Cal. Pat. Rolls, Hen. VI, 1441-46, p. 44); 1429-1444. Supplementing the collections in Add. MSS. 27443-27446, 34888, 34889 and 43488-43491. The letters were printed in the Hist. MSS. Comm., 12th Report, 1891, Appendix, Pt. ix, pp. 179-182. The original of the letter from John Maryot (ff. 1b-2) is Add. MS. 27443, f. 94, and an abstract of it was given by James Gairdner in his Paston Letters (ed. 1900, no. 40; ed. 1904, no. 54). The names of the correspondents and the parties to the deed are given in the Index to this Catalogue. See also Add. Ch. 14523-14526 and Cal Pat. Rolls, Hen. VI, 1436-1441 , pp. 99, 245, 386. Paper, originally in roll form; ff. 2. 0.875 m. x 0.31O m. xv cent. As the items are numbered ii-viii, the beginning of the roll containing no. i may be presumed lost. Belonged, in 19th cent., to R. W. Ketton of Felbrigg Hall, co. Norfolk (Hist. MSS. Comm., 12th Report, 1890, p. 42), great-uncle of the donor. After the death of William Paston, 2nd Earl of Yarmouth, and the
dispersal of his estates East Beckham passed to the Windhams of Felbrigg circ. 1740, and the MS. must therefore have been transferred to Felbrigg Hall sometime after this date. The roll may at one time have been in the 'bagge with evydence off Est Bekham' which was contained with other deeds 'in the square trussyng coffre', referred to in the list of Sir John Paston's deeds printed by Gairdner, op. cit., 1900 ed., no. 679 (dated by Gairdner to 1471). Presented by R. W. Ketton-Cremer, Esq., F.S.A.
