ASTRONOMICAL CALENDAR AND 'ARS MORIENDI', in Latin. Parts of two originally distinct MSS. as follows:-
(1) Astronomical Calendar, including tables of conjunctions, of the length of the hours of daylight and darkness, of the altitude of the sun, and of the length of the shadow of a man six feet tall at each hour of the day. Imperfect (lacks the outer columns of each page, and parts of the calendar and tables for May, August and December). In the Calendar, the Feast of St Thomas Becket (7 July) has been erased and reinserted in a post-mediaeval hand (f. 13). At the end (ff. 25-25b) are tables of lunar eclipses for the three cycles 1406-1424, 1425-1443, 1444-1462. ff. 1-28.
(2) 'Ars Moriendi': the first part of the well-known tract attributed variously to Domenico Capranica, Matthew of Krakau, Albertus Magnus, and others (cf. Hain, Repertorium Bibliographicum, nos. 483, 4386-4406, 5801- 5802). Beg. 'Cum de presentis'. Ends imperfectly 'pro se eligisset pena mortis'. For other copies see Royal MS. 8 B. xvi, ff. 2-13b; Harley MS. 2370, ff. 1-39b; Add. MS. 20029, ff. 117-130. ff. 29-36. Vellum; ff. 36. 175 mm. x 90 mm. (cropped). xv cent. Written in England. Gatherings mainly of 8 leaves (ii lacks 1, 8; iv6 lacks 2, 4, 5; v lacks 8). Art. 1 is written in red and black with some blue initials; ff. 26, 27 are stubs and f. 28 is blank. Art. 2 (sec. folio 'melior est'), in another hand, has red, blue and mauve decorated initials at the beginning (f. 29); f. 36 is a stub. Presented by J. J. Chaplin, Esq.
