HARRIS PAPERS
- Scope & Content:
-
Letters and papers of George Prideaux Harris (d. 1810), an attorney-at-law of Plymouth, who sailed from Spithead in H.T. 'Ocean', 24 Apr. 1803, as Deputy Surveyor-General on the Civil
Staff of Lt.-Col. David Collins, Lieutenant-Governor of a settlement to be established at Port Philip, New South Wales; 1803-1812. The expedition reached Port Philip in Oct. 1803, but in Feb. 1804 another settlement was established instead at Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land. Harris was appointed a magistrate for the colony in 1804 and Acting Deputy Commissary in 1810. The present papers were used and extracts printed by R. W. Giblin, The Early History of Tasmania, 2 vols., London, 1928, and Melbourne, 1939. Many official documents relating to this expedition (with some references to Harris) are printed in Historical Records of Australia, 3rd Ser., vol. i, Sydney, 1921. The names of the writers will be found in the Index to the present Catalogue. Two volumes. Paper. Folio and large folio. Presented by S. C. Ratcliff, Esq., I.S.0., on behalf of Mrs M. D. Harris.
