As follows:-(1) Letters received, chiefly as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal, from:-(a) Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, chiefly as Foreign Secretary; 1835-1864. One letter dated 24 Nov. 1835, which is missing from this series, is now Add. MS. 42240, f. 17: Lord Palmerston's autograph copies of other missing letters will be found (together with Lord Howard de Walden's original letters to Palmerston) in Add. MSS. 48440-48443; ff. 1-178;-(b) Charles John Canning, 2nd Viscount and (1859) Earl Canning, as Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs; 1842-1846. ff. 179-248. (2) Letter received, as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Belgium, from Edward Henry Stanley, Lord Stanley (15th Earl of Derby 1869), Foreign Secretary; 29 Apr. 1868. These papers were the property of Lucy Joan Ellis (née Cavendish-Bentinck) afterwards (1889) Scott-Ellis, widow of Lord Howard de Walden, and passed on her death to their third son, the Hon. Charles Arthur Ellis (d. 1906), by whose surviving executor, the Hon. William George Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck, they were presented to the Museum with the consent of the residuary legatees, Joan Emily Mary Campbell, widow of Hugh, 4th Earl Cawdor, and Agatha Lilian Allsopp, widow of Charles, 3rd Baron Hindlip
