(2) Letter from the Privy Council to Edmund Bonner, Bishop of London, announcing that Queen Mary I was with child and ordering the Te Deum to be sung in all churches of the diocese; Westminster, 27 Nov. 1554. Printed (London, 'in ædibus Iohannis Cawodi', i.e. John Cawood, Queen's Printer; black letter) with manuscript certification by Humfrey Dyson, Public Notary. Belonged to Thomas Jolley, F.S.A. (Sotheby's sale-cat., 18 May 1853, lot 1249; sold to Stewart), who refers to it in a letter to Rev. Philip Bliss, D.C.L., 3 Jan. 1852 (Add. MS. 34578, f. 483b). f. 4.

(9) Letter (concluding page only) from John Tillotson, D.D., Dean (afterwards Archbishop) of Canterbury, to Nicholas Hunt of Canterbury conc. the latter's illness; [Edmonton, 16 (in some copies 26) Jan. 168,7/8]. Copy, (?) early 18th cent. Other copies of the letter are in Add. MSS. 4236, f. 289; 5105, f. 24; 19683, ff. 88, 91, and 45511, f. 29; it has been printed in F. H[utchinson], The Life of the Most Reverend Father in God John Tillotson, 1717, p. 74, T. Birch, The Life of the Most Reverend Dr John Tillotson, 1752, p. 135 (whence it was reprinted in The Works of the Most Reverend Dr John Tillotson, ed. T. Birch, 1752, i, p. xxxviii), an unidentified edition of Elegant Extracts: or, Useful and Entertaining Passages in Prose, circ. 1790, p. 595, and The Gentleman's Magazine, lxv, 1795, p. 275. There are many textual variations in the different copies of the letter; the present version is most closely related to that published in 1717, but is not derived from the printed text. ff. 17-17b.

(13) Military sketch-map of the Pisuerga River in Spain, for about 20 miles above Dueñas, by Maj. (afterwards Gen.) Philip Bainbrigge (K.C.B. 1854); [? October 1812]. The map is on the back of a letter (in Spanish) from Gen. Miguel Ricardo de Alava to Col. Geronimo Mesino, Valladolid, 10 Sept. 1812; it originally extended over 'half a sheet of coarse foolscap' stitched to the bottom of the present sheet, where sewing holes are visible (see Aide Mémoire to the Military Sciences, 1846, i, p. 535 n.; Plate II of this work, and of its 2nd edn., 1853, is an engraving by J. W. Lowry of part of the map). Presented to Prince Arthur (1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn 1874) by Gen. Bainbrigge's son, Maj.-Gen. Philip John Bainbrigge; on f. 28 is his letter to Maj.-Gen.
