HAIG'S 'ORDER OF THE DAY': the draft text of the special order of the day addressed 'To All ranks of the British Forces in France' by Field- Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig 1919, as Commander-in-Chief of the British Armies in France; 11 Apr. 1918. Autograph. Signed. The order, which became popularly known as 'the backs to the wall message', was issued on the third day of the German (Lys) offensive in Flanders, when the enemy, having forced back the British-Portuguese line between Givenchy and Messines, seemed to have every chance of reaching Hazebrouck and cutting off the Belgian Army and the British Second Army. For the final version of the text, differing only in minor detail from the corrected state of this draft, see Sir J. E. Edmonds, Military Operations: France and Belgium, 1918, ii, 1937, p. 512, App. 10. Paper; ff. i + 1. Quarto. A.D. 1918. f. i is a typewritten descriptive note, approved by Sir J. E. Edmonds. Bequeathed by Sir Philip Sassoon, Bart., private secretary to Earl Haig 1915-1918.
