HUDSON LOWE PAPERS: CORRESPONDENCE of Lieutenant-General Sir Hudson Lowe, G.C.M.G., K.C.B., Governor of St Helena 1815-1821, during the detention of Napoleon; 1803-1842. English, French, Italian and Greek. Other papers of his in the Department, on which see Brit. Mus. Quart., xxiii, 1960-1961, pp. 63-64, are Add. MSS. 15729, 2O1O7-20240, 29543, 36297, ff. 12-21, 41192, ff. 68-70b (bought at the Crawford sale, Sotheby's sale-cats. 1-4 Dec. 1924, 27-28 Apr. and 30 Nov.-3 Dec. 1925, at which other Lowe Papers appeared), 49528, 56088-56091 and in Paris, Bibl. Nat., MSS. angl. 3-24. At the beginning of the present volume (f. 1) is a letter, 7 July 1795, to Lowe's father, Hudson Lowe, surgeon-major at Gibraltar, from Lieutenant-General the Hon. Charles Stuart (K.B. 1799). Several of the letters relate to honours and appointments received by Lowe, and include (f. 37) a letter from the East India Company, 23 Aug. 1815, appointing him Governor of St Helena. At f. 49 is a letter, apparently intercepted, from Francesco Antommarchi, Napoleon's last physician (for a similar letter of his, see Add. MS. 20214, f. 149). Letters at ff. 3-4b, 19-20, 29-29b are printed in whole or in part in W. Forsyth, History of the Captivity of Napoleon at St Helena, 1853, i, pp. 91, 1OO, 430. Copies or extracts from ff. 7-8b, 19-22b, 25-29b, 37, 40-41b appear in Add. MSS. 2O1O7-20115. Paper; ff. i + 96. Folio. 1795-1842. Inserted as f. 1 is an unsigned, undated letter forwarding the papers to the Museum, apparently from Lowe's daughter, Clara Maria Susanna Lowe (d. 1904), the donor of Add. MSS. 29543 and 36297, ff. 12-21.
