LAMB (MELBOURNE) PAPERS

45546-45556. CORRESPONDENCE OF THE FAMILY OF LAMB, Viscounts Melbourne, and of relatives by marriage, consisting mostly of collections of papers of the following:-(1) Elizabeth Lamb née Milbanke (b. 1752, d. 1818), wife of Peniston, 1st Viscount Melbourne (vols. I-III);-(2) her third son, Frederick James Lamb (b. 1782, d. 1853), Baron Beauvale, 3rd Viscount Melbourne, diplomatist (chiefly vols. V-VII);-(3) her daughter, Emily Mary Lamb (b. 1787, d. 1869), wife first (1805) of Peter, 5th Earl Cowper, and secondly (1839) of Henry, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, the Prime Minister (chiefly vols. IV-XI); aft. 1785-1864, n.d. For further Lamb Papers see Add. MS. 45911. Many of the letters were printed by the donor in her two works, In Whig Society, 1775-1818 (1921) and Lady Palmerston and her Times, 2 Vols. (1922). They also furnished material for Lord Sudley, The Lieven-Palmerston Correspondence, 1828-1856 (1943), Lord Bessborough, Georgiana: extracts from the correspondence of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (1955), and Sir Tresham Lever, The Letters of Lady Palmerston (1957). The papers apparently remained at Brocket Hall, co. Hertf., the family home, during the lifetime of Lady Palmerston and on her death passed to her younger daughter, Frances Elizabeth Jocelyn (d. 1880), widow of Robert, Viscount Jocelyn, who bequeathed them to her grandchildren (including the donor). Eleven volumes. Various sizes. Presented by Mabell, Dowager Countess of Airlie, G.C.V.O., G.B.E., as representative of the family, and reserved from public use until 1980.
