MORALISING WORKS, in Latin, viz.:-
(1) Disticha Catonis. Book I (without prologue) and four lines of Book II, including the line 'humanos si forte velis depellere morbos', for which see Marcus Boas, Disticha Catonis, Amsterdam, 1952, pp. 91-92. The text appears to belong to the Traditio Vulgata recentior of Boas (op. cit., pp. lx-lxii), and resembles that of MS. V in his apparatus. Interlinear glosses in Latin and English. ff. 2-4.
(2) Gesta Romanorum. Forty-three chapters from the branch usually called the Anglo-Latin Gesta. This version is virtually identical with Harley 5369, ff. 38-100b, for which see Catalogue of Romances, iii, pp. 183-99. The contemporary numbering of the narrationes is, however, defective, the numbers 32 and 36 being repeated, so that the total given in the index (ff. 79b- 80b) is only forty-one. Descriptions of other MSS. of the Gesta Romanorum in the Museum are given by Hermann Oesterley, Gesta Romanorum, Berlin, 1872, pp. 186-194, 213-214, 237-240; and Cat. of Romances, iii, pp. 183-271. ff. 5-80b.
(3) Sermons, in Latin: (a) Solum mihi superest sepulchrum. Job 17. Scitis quod quoniam fures et latrones. ff. 81-84b;-(b) Dicite filie syon Ecce Rex tuus venit...Mt. 21. Verba ista scripta sunt. f. 84b. The sermons are clearly of English composition, cf. f. 83b 'qui clangunt tubas primo quoniam clangunt sonant brag. brag longam mensuram tenendo sed in fine leag. brag. grag.'. Paper (watermark a crown) and vellum (the middle and outside leaves of each quire); ff. v + 84. 217 mm. x 150 mm. First half xv cent. Gatherings of 18 leaves (iv lacks 4, v lacks 13-18). Original limp vellum covers. Formerly Ashburnham MS. Appendix CCXLVI, with bookplate (f. iv), affixed in May 1897, when the Appendix was bought privately by Henry Yates Thompson. Sold at Sotheby's, 1 May 1899, lot 168. Not listed in the Catalogue of the manuscripts at Ashburnham Place, Appendix, London, 1861. Presented by Lady Mabel Emily McCormick.
