'THE HEROIC EFFIGIES'S (sic) OF PATRIARCHS, IN ANCIENT COINS' (also entitled 'Metallographia Sacra') by the Rev. William Stukeley, M.D., F.S.A.; 1755. An unpublished (and apparently unfinished) work consisting of drawings of selected classical coins, with notes identifying the subjects either with characters from the Old Testament or with aspects of the supposed patriarchal religion, most of the drawings being copied from J. Foy- Vaillant, Numismata Aerea Imperatorum...in Coloniis, Paris, 1688; T. Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, Numismata Antiqua, 1746 (the copy used had the plates numbered in single sequence, not part by part); and P. Seguin, Selecta Numismata Antiqua, 2nd ed., Paris, 1684. The frontispiece to 45570 (f. 1) is cut from a sale-cat. for 2 Feb. 1756, and Stukeley has inserted various other engravings and his own drawings to illustrate his theme. Autograph. The work is not among the extant manuscripts of Stukeley listed by S. Pigott, William Stukeley, Oxford, 1950, pp. 189-201. A similar, possibly companion work, is entered in the sale-cat. of Stukeley's possessions, 16 May 1766, lot 95. Paper (drawing on 45572, f. 106, vellum). Octavo and (45573 B) quarto; four volumes. A.D. 1755. Contemporary gold-tooled bindings of brown leather on 45570-45573A, the tooling of 45571-45573 A being identical. Belonged to the St John family of Dinmore, co. Heref., descendants of Stukeley (see The Family Memoirs of the Rev. William Stukeley, M.D., ed. W. C. Lukis (Surtees Soc., vol. lxxiii, 1882), i, pp. i-ii; Pigott, op. cit., pp. xiii-xiv; Sotheby's sale-cat., 14-16 July 1924, lot 253); Messrs Ellis, bookseller (cutting from catalogue no. 225, Mar. 1925, 45570, f. iii); and Sir Walter W. Greg (signature, 45570, f. 2).
45570, f. ii, is a bookplate bearing the arms of the MacGregor family. Presented by Sir Walter Wilson Greg, F.B.A.
