TWENTY-TWO LETTERS (some written in French) chiefly from English or French authors and artists to Emilia Frances, née Strong, wife successively of the Rev. Mark Pattison, Rector of Lincoln College, Oxford (1861-1884), and of Sir Charles Wentworth Dilke, 2nd Bart., P.C., M.P. (1885-1911), together with various items complementary to her correspondence in the Dilke Papers, viz., Add. MSS. 43903-43908 (see also Add. MSS. 49455, 49611); 1884-1903. The letters relate to Lady Dilke's works on French art and partly to her The Shrine of Death and other stories, 1886. Throughout the volume are pencil notes [1904-1911] by Sir Charles Dilke, who quoted several of the letters in the Memoir of his wife prefixed to his edition (1905) of her The Book of the Spiritual Life, and at the end (f. 44) is a letter, 3 Feb. 1905, to him from Walter Theodore Watts-Dunton.
