NOTEBOOKS, ETC., OF JOHN HALL, physician and dissenter, of Bradford, W.R., co. York (circ. 1631-1709); of his grandson, Joshua Firth (1675- 1769), son of his only daughter Mary, and John Firth, of Halifax, W. R., co. York (d. 1704); and of Joshua Firth's son, the younger John Firth (1717- 1782); circ. 1632-1751. Most of the volumes bear the signature of John Scholfield Firth (1757-1820), son of the younger John Firth, dated 25 Oct. 1782, and contain notes on their compilers by J. S. Firth's great-grandson, G. C. Moore Smith (1858-1940); the notes on f. iii of vol. IV are by the Rev. J. C. Franks (d. 1867), son-in-law of J. S. Firth. Accounts of vols I-VI, and VIII, with extracts from notes of current events, etc., added by John Hall to vols. III, V, VI, VIII, dated 8 July 1683-circ. 28 Feb. 1709, were printed by Moore Smith in Yorkshire Notes & Queries, i, 1888, pp. 175-186, and by B. Dale in The Bradford Antiquary, New Ser., ii, 1905, pp. 493-510. On the modern rebacks of vols I, III, and V are labels bearing stamped inscriptions 'Quarto 1', 'Octavo 2', and 'Quarto 5' respectively. Vols. IV, VI-VIII have written inside the front cover in an 18th-cent. hand 'No: 5 of Octavos', 'No: 3 of Quartos', 'No: 2 of Octavos', and 'No: 6 of Quartos' respectively and they are referred to under these descriptions by Moore Smith, op. cit.
