English, French and German. The collection relates mainly to Wilson's imprisonment in France from 1803-1807 as a civilian prisoner of war. Wilson was arrested on a visit to Paris, after the renewal of hostilities between Great Britain and France on 18 May 1803, in accordance with the decree of 2 Prairial an 11 (22 May 1803; cf. J. B. Duvergier, Collection Complète des Lois, xiv, 1836, p. 126). He was ordered first to Fontainebleau and transferred in Dec. 1803 to Verdun (45691, f. 116), where he remained until Feb. 1807 when he was allowed to move to Ghent (45692, f. 146). The collection consists mostly of family correspondence and papers relating to fellow prisoners in France. The names of the writers are included in the Index to the present Catalogue. Paper.
