CERTIFICATE OF ARMS, in Spanish, issued by Don Gabriel Ortiz de Cagiguera, King of Arms to Charles IV of Spain and Knight Pensioner of the Order of Charles III, jointly to Don Josef Lucas de Gorvea y Badillo, Fiscal of the Real Audiencia in Lima, and his two brothers, Don Manuel and Don Eusebio de Gorvea y Badillo, resident in Lima; 1792. The certificate was drawn up at the request of the brothers (f. 6) after the issue to them in 1791 of two patents of nobility (f. 3). lt includes descriptions of the history, arms and genealogy of the families of Gorvea (f. 7), Badillo (f. 23b), Echaurren (f. 33b) and Madaria (f. 40b), from which they were descended, and a coarsely illuminated genealogical tree (f. 49), certified as authentic by the monogram of the King of Arms. Signed and sealed (with seal en placard) by Don Gabriel Ortiz de Cagiguera, Madrid, 23 Aug. 1792 (f. 58b). Followed by two notarial instruments (ff. 58b, 59), dated Madrid, 27 Aug. 1792, testifying to the validity of the certificate, signed respectively by Don Casimiro Antonio Gomez, Don Tomás de Sancha y Prado and Don Manuel de Velo, Royal Notaries Public of the Numero of Madrid, with seal en placard of the Chapter of the Numero (f. 59), and by Don Manuel de Pinedo, Secretary of the Royal Council and senior member of the Ayuntamiento of Madrid, with imperfect seal en placard of the city of Madrid (f. 59b). The complete seal can be seen in Egerton MS. 640, f. 61b, on an attestation, also signed by Don Manuel de Pinedo, of a certificate of arms of 1790, in which the decoration, particularly that of the initials on landscape backgrounds, is similar to that of the present MS. Vellum; ff. 59. Folio. A.D. 1792. Borders of red parallel lines with blue ornamental corner-pieces. Lettering in gold, blue and red. Eighteen initials of gold superimposed on landscape backgrounds in square frames similar to those of Egerton MS. 640. Eight ornamental paragraph headings. Folio 1 consists of a full-page painting of the arms of Gorvea y Badillo (as granted in the certificate) quartering the shields of Gorvea, Badillo, Echaurren and Madaria, which are also separately painted on ff. 17, 30, 37b, 46b, respectively. Folio 2 contains a full-page illumination, in contemporary classical style, comprising the incipit of the certificate, 'Don Gabriel Ortiz de Cagiguera', inscribed on a pedestal surmounted by an engraved stamp (dated 1792) of the arms of Charles IV of Spain, between two painted banners bearing the arms of Castile and Leon: on either side of the pedestal stand allegorical female figures. Binding of crimson leather, gilt-tooled at the edges and on the spine, with marbled end-papers. Presented by Warren Royal Dawson, Esq., O.B.E., F.R.S.E., F.S.A.
