LETTERS FROM BENJAMIN DISRAELI (Earl of Beaconsfield 1876, Prime Minister) and his parents to Benjamin Austen (d. 1861), solicitor, and his wife, Sara (d. 1888); 1826-1839, n.d. Included also is a letter to B. Austen's nephew Sir Austen Henry Layard, G.C.B. The correspondence between Benjamin Disraeli and the Austens (art. 3 below) is that to which reference is made in the description of vol. XVIII of the Layard Papers (viz. Add. MS. 38948). The collection was used by B. R. Jerman, The Young Disraeli, 1960.
(1) Letters from Isaac D'Israeli, the author (and father of Benjamin Disraeli), to Benjamin Austen on personal matters; 1828-1832; followed (f. 7) by a funeral ode (in heroic couplets) to a dog, beg. 'Max, true descendant of Newfoundland race', dated 1831, and ascribed to Isaac D'Israeli, but not in his handwriting. ff. 1-7.
(2) Letter from Maria D'Israeli, wife of Isaac D'Israeli, to Mrs Austen on a social matter; 6 Apr. 1830. ff. 8-9b.
(3) Letters from Benjamin Disraeli to his friend Benjamin Austen on personal matters (chiefly financial) together with copies or drafts of several of Austen's replies; 1826-1837, n.d.; included also (ff. 21-170b passim) are several letters, 1830-1839, from Disraeli to Mrs Austen, chiefly on literary subjects. Many of these letters have been printed in Monypenny and Buckle, Life of Disraeli, vol. i, 1910. ff. 10-185b.
(4) Letter from Benjamin Disraeli, as Prime Minister, to Austen Henry Layard (G.C.B. 1878) concerning the abortive suggestion to purchase the residue of the Alessandro Castellani collection for the British Museum (where it was then on deposit); 12 Jan. 1876. ff. 186-187b.
(5) Letter from John Singleton Copley, Baron Lyndhurst, as Lord Chancellor, to Messrs Austen and Hobson, solicitors, concerning the legal qualifications of 'Mr. Disraeli', i.e. presumably Ralph D'Israeli, brother of Benjamin Disraeli, who was appointed to a Chancery Clerkship in 1841; 30 Sept. 1841. ff. 188-189. Paper; ff. 189. Large folio. 1826-1876. Presented jointly by the Misses Julia Katharine Rosalind and Isabel Constantia Louisa Du Cane, the nieces of Lady Layard.
