Most of the letters are of the 19th century; eight are addressed to Francis Wrangham, Archdeacon of Cleveland (ff. 3, 18, 28, 40, 102, 175, 181, 255) and seven to Thomas Dixon Spain, of the Church of England Temperance Society (ff. 4, 5, 9, 80, 81, 140, 167). The only 17th-century letter is from John Houghton, writer on agriculture, to Sir Robert Southwell, 5 Nov. 1692 (f. 158); anonymous directions 'for improoving corne ground by the sea mudd', of the late 17th century, are at f. 160.
