'GRANDE SONATE SYMPHONIQUE À QUATRE MAINS', op. 112, by Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870). Autograph MS. in score of the piano duet composed in October and November 1845 (cf. ff. i, 1) and published simultaneously in London, Paris and Berlin in 1846. An autograph dedication to King Louis Philippe of France, before whom the work received its first performance, is at f. 1 (see A. D. Coleridge, Life of Moscheles...by his Wife, ii, 1873, p. 149; E. Bellasis, Cherubini: Memorials illustrative of his Life ..., Birmingham, 1912, p. 279 n.). In four movements, viz.:-(1) Andante patetico, with middle section allegro agitato, ff. 1b-22b;-(2) Andante expressivo, ff. 23-27b;-(3) Scherzoso alla tedesca antica, ff. 28b-34b;-
(4) Introduzione e Finale, ff. 35b-47. There are numerous corrections and alterations by the composer. A contemporary critical appreciation is at ff. ii-iiib. For an autograph anthem by Moscheles see Add. MS. 31798. Paper; ff. iv + 47. Folio. A.D. 1845. According to a note at f. iv the MS. was 'purchased from Chester [J. and W. Chester, Ltd., music publishers of London and Brighton?] about 1919'. Presented by Herbert C. Percy, Esq.
