(1) 'The Messiah', by George Frederick Handel, first performed in Dublin, 13 Apr. 1742. Tenor solos and chorus parts together with, at ff. 5- 5b, the contralto aria 'He shall feed His flock'. At ff. 18-19b is an appendix containing:-(a) Tenor chorus part of 'Their Sound is gone Out'. f. 18;-
(b) Tenor chorus part of 'Break forth into Joy', the chorus of the duet-chorus version of 'How beautiful are the feet'. ff. 18b-19;-(c) Alternative solo version in C minor for tenor of 'How Beautifull are the feet' with the note 'Precede ye Chorus'. ff. 19-19b;-(d) Tenor arioso version of 'Their sound is gone Out'. f. 19b. For a discussion of variants of this section see J. P. Larsen, Handel's Messiah, 1957, pp. 230-236, etc. ff. 1-19b.
(2) 'Judas Maccabaeus', by George Frederick Handel, first performed in London, 1 Apr. 1747. Tenor chorus parts only. ff. 20-28b.
(3) 'Judith', by Thomas Augustine Arne, first performed in London, 27 Feb. 1761. Tenor chorus parts only. A partly autograph full score is Add. MSS. 11515-11517 (see A. Hughes-Hughes, Catalogue of Manuscript Music in the British Museum, i, 1906, pp. 369-370). ff. 29-35b.
(4) 'Abel', by Thomas Augustine Arne, first performed in Dublin, 18 Feb. 1744 and revived in London, 12 Mar. 1755. Apart from the present MS. this oratorio is known from one song only (see Add. MS. 34267, f. 25 and The British Union-Catalogue of Early Music, ed. E. B. Schnapper, i, 1957, pp. 2,40). Tenor parts of choruses as follows:-(a) 'Proclaim the words gone forth'. f. 37:-
(b) 'Firstborn of human race'. ff. 37b-38;-(c) 'So Rebel Angels Sunk to fatal ill'. ff. 38-38b;-(d) 'There we tune our heav'nly lyres'. ff. 38b-40;-
(e) 'Peace descending'. ff. 40-40b;-(f) 'Let them fall who would rise'. ff. 40b-41;-(g) 'Sweet the Rose'. f. 41;-(h) 'In the dear Bosom of the Father's Love'. ff. 41-42;-(i)'Haste haste Away'. ff. 42-42b;-(k)' 'Tis death, 'tis Death'. f.42b-(l)'To Nature's Lord & heav'n's high King'. ff.43-43b. Paper; ff. iii + 43. Oblong folio. XVIII cent. (aft. 1761). The note 'Tenor Wm Davis' appears in offset at f. ii from the leaf now pasted down inside the front cover, f. ib.
